Properties of monatomic structures - noble gases
Noble gases do not exist as molecules so the term “intermolecular”
should never be used here.
Their atoms have a full valence shell of electrons.
They have no unpaired electrons.
They are stable.
They do not form covalent bonds with one another.
Nobel gases exist as discrete atoms.
There are london forces (van der Waals forces) between the atoms.
These forces increase in strength as the surface area of the atoms increase.
Descending the group, the boiling points increase,
as the london forces increase in strength.
Helium needs to be cooled to near -273 oC,
known as “absolute zero” before it condenses.
